As the WECSSAA girls slo-pitch regular season concludes this week, the North Star Wolves are looking to improve on their record.
As this issue of the River Town Times went to press, North Star is seeking to build on their 3-3 record. They hosted the Cardinal Carter Cougars Monday afternoon at the Malden Centre Park diamonds and the final score was 6-3 for North Star.
The Wolves were in action last Thursday afternoon at Co-An Park in McGregor against the Sandwich Sabres.
The Wolves played well but a late rally by the Sabres gave Sandwich a 12-11 victory.
North Star entered the bottom of the seventh inning with an 11-7 lead but Sandwich put up five runs to earn the walk-off win.
Despite the loss, Payton Meloche of the Wolves believed North Star played well.
“I think it went well,” said Meloche. “We believe in each other. Everyone gets hits and cheers for each other. It was such a close game. I think we can win any other day.”
The Wolves need to clean up their mistakes and continue to have fun and then they’ll be fine, she added.
There has been a bit of a rocky road this season, Meloche stated, as they’ve had to battle rain in addition to their opponents.
Meloche said she and her teammates have softball experience and “it helps a lot.”
North Star is busy this week as they have three games in three days to conclude their regular season. In addition to Monday afternoon’s game against Cardinal Carter, they travelled to Leamington Tuesday afternoon to play the Lions.
The Wolves return to Malden Centre Park Wednesday afternoon (May 6) at 3:30 to close out the regular season against the Belle River Nobles.
