It’s been a good season so far for the North Star Wolves and it continued last week.

The Wolves were in action twice, both on their home court, and won all three games in each match. North Star opened the week last Tuesday (Oct. 13) against the Belle River Nobles. The Wolves took all three sets, winning 25-15, 25-20 and 25-20.

Two nights later, the Wolves returned home for a match with the Tecumseh Vista Academy Vortex. The first set was the closest of the three with North Star winning 25-19, but the Wolves pulled away from there and won the final two sets 25-9 and 25-12.

North Star’s Joshua Grove said they played well in the match against the Vortex.

“The match was pretty good. It was a game of focus, not skill.”

Grove indicated they wanted to focus on being game-ready and how they prepare for matches.

Grove added the regular season has been going well for the Wolves, who were 6-1 on the season after last Thursday’s home game against Tecumseh Vista Academy. The lone loss to that point, an Oct. 1 match at Riverside where they fell two sets to one, came after a week where they “messed around” in practice and it carried over in the match.

Evan Scott added they were “very positive out there,” and that they worked well as a team.

“We have high expectations for this season,” said Scott.

With three more games after the win over the Vortex, Scott said they plan to finish the season strong. Both Scott and Grove indicated the goal is to get to OFSAA this year and play for a provincial title.

“We inherited some pretty good juniors from last year,” said Scott, with Grove pointing out the junior Wolves won the SWOSSAA title a year ago.

Assistant coach Mary Ewer said they had a decent week of practice heading into last week. She indicated they are trying to put the work in during practice so it will carry over into games.

“Our expectations are to try to get better with each week and see where the chips fall when it’s time to play,” added head coach Jeff Miller.

The Wolves hosted UMEI this past Tuesday evening (Oct. 20), in a match played after this issue of the River Town Times went to press. They are on the road for their final two regular season matches, as they head to Leamington to play Cardinal Carter this Thursday (Oct. 22) and Essex next Tuesday (Oct. 27).
