Encounter Church held its “Summer Shack” vacation Bible school summer camp last week with five days of activities at the Alma St. church. Another summer camp is planned at the church in August.

A local church has held the first week of its summer camps with another one planned for August.

Encounter Church held its first of two Vacation Bible Schools last week (July 13-17) at the church with the theme being “Surf Shack.” Five days of activities kept children ages 5-11 busy with children’s pastor Meagan Sarnes stating the students are “super energetic” and engaged in the activities.

Crafts, a walk to the Amherstburg Library, games, water games, science experiments and worship were just part of the schedule over the five days. The outdoor activities, such as the walk to the library, were held earlier in the week with the poor air quality from the northern Ontario wildfires causing things to have to be shifted indoors later in the week.

“We had to pivot because of the weather,” said Sarnes.

“The kids are doing great adapting to the changes,” added Taylor Spencer, one of the adult supervisors helping to run the camp.

Roughly 40 children signed up for the “Surf Shack” summer camp, something Sarnes said was a great number.

“It’s exactly what we envisioned,” she said.

Spencer added there were a lot of Amherstburg children, some who go to the church and some who do not, as well as some who utilize the youth programming during the week.

“We do have another camp coming up in August,” added Sarnes. “There are spots still available.”

The “Shipwrecked” summer VBS runs Aug. 10-14. More information can be found at www.encounteraburg.ca/events or by calling 519-736-5644.
