Fire safety

The Amherstburg Fire Department cannot emphasize the importance of fire safety enough, especially with the holiday season approaching. Mio said residents are reminded to use caution with heating sources, holiday decorations, and candles, ensure smoke alarms are carbon monoxide detectors are working properly, and call 911 immediately in the event of a fire.

CO alarm regulations

Amherstburg Fire wants to remind residents that starting Jan. 1, Ontario’s updated Fire Code requires carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on every storey of homes and in more areas of multi-unit buildings that have fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, attached garages or related heating systems, expanding beyond the current requirement to just near sleeping areas to better protect residents from the deadly, odorless gas.

For any questions, concerns or more information on other residential requirements please visit the fire department’s website at www.amherstburg.ca/fire/fire-prevention/carbon-monoxide-information or call at 519-736-6500.
