Stella Maris Catholic Elementary School busy at Christmas Open House

A local school opened its doors recently and the school community got into the holiday spirit.

Stella Maris Catholic Elementary School welcomed families to the building for a Christmas open house. Families went through the building and stopped at roughly ten stations along the way, with activities include cookie decorating, colouring, Christmas card making, a “Minute to Win It” game, dancing, pictures with Santa Claus and more.

There was also Christmas carols sung by students in the school gymnasium.

“This is our third annual Christmas open house,” said principal Marisa Wismer. “The main focus is family engagement. We want to strengthen the home/school relationship.”

The Christmas open house allows families to come in and tour the building, meet with staff and engage with other families.

“We keep growing the event,” said Wismer. “We get an awesome turnout.”

As part of the Christmas open house, there was an Advent Almsgiving Gift of Hope food drive. Non-perishable food items were collected for those in need.

“We’re donating those to the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission,” said Wismer.

The food was a way to ensure their faith was included as part of the open house.

The school also opened its doors to local businesses, with the River Bookshop and Evelyn’s Candy House on hand to sell snacks and reading material to those who stopped by.

The entire school community was welcome to attend, with some inviting extended family members, Wismer added. She said Stella Maris was able to showcase what happens in their building and meet and greet with a lot of people.

Wismer added it was an informal event and they were happy to greet everyone who turned out.

“We’re a community school and we enjoy being part of the Town of Amherstburg,” she added.
